Amano

Heads up bakery lovers, there’s a new joint in town! Introducing the latest venture from the talented Hip Group – Amano bakery. Located in Britomart, you can now get your daily fix of artisan breads, sandwiches, sweet treats, pizza by the slice and salads. I visited Amano last week for lunch and was excited to try out their offerings. Walking in, I loved everything about this new bakery – the well-stocked small space, the heavenly smell of freshly baked bread, the clever design and hanging wheat feature (look up when you step inside), the friendly and welcoming manager I chatted to while I was there and the  staff member who didn’t mind explaining each offering and the ingredients used, as I seriously couldn’t decide on just one thing! So, I ordered a slice of pizza, a salad and a choux pastry bun. The pizza by the slice was high on my list – it is not like traditional pizza, as it is made by slowly fermenting the dough, and is more in the style of focaccia bread. The salami, provolone …

Sydney Travel Diary

Sydney is one of my favourite cities. I love it because it is alive and vibrant any time of the day, it is very multi-cultural (think a vast range of delicious foods and products to buy) plus the views are always stunning, whether you are walking through Sydney National Park or are standing on top of Sydney Harbour Bridge. I also love that there are so many things to do, and everyone is catered for, whether you are into shopping, being out on the water, trying new foods, keeping active or just relaxing on a beautiful beach (I love Bondi and Bronte). La Cigale French Market

If you are looking for something fun to do on a Saturday or Sunday morning and which involves lots of delicious food, then I highly recommend checking out La Cigale French Market in Parnell. It is undoubtedly the best market in Auckland. Here’s a taste of what you may come across at La Cigale: – Delicious coffee, macarons and croissants just out of the oven – Rotisserie chickens, gooey croque monsieurs, breakfast buns and other savoury delights – Delectable tarts (my favourite being the Frangipani tart with rhubarb and pistachio) and eclairs from Amadine – Freshly made juices, plus smoothies from The Organic Mechanic – Muesli and chia seed bowls from The Vital Bowl – Various international foods like paella, crepes and gozleme – Freshly baked bread, smoked fish, fruit and vegetables – Tasty dips, Turkish bread, wraps and fresh dates – And you probably wouldn’t believe it but there is a stand near the entrance selling every dog treat you can imagine! Borough Market, London

Borough Market = amazing!!! An absolute must if you are a foodie fanatic (like myself) or love trying out new foods! We visited Borough Market on our last day in London – luckily my appetite was back, because the food options here are outstanding, both in presentation and taste. You’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables, pungent cheeses, savoury breads, cookies the size of your hands (see picture below), sweet treats, handmade chocolates and ice cream. And if that doesn’t satisfy you, there is ethnic food available (for example from the ‘Soul Food’ and vegetarian Indian stands), super tasty pies (Pieminister), haloumi burgers (The Veggie Table), salted caramel doughnuts (Bread Ahead Bakery) and fresh juices and smoothies. While I would have loved to have tried one of everything, I was craving a pie. Pieminister were serving the most delicious array of pies, plus they use free range meat and chicken and have two vegetarian options. I went with the ‘Free Ranger’ consisting of chicken, ham hock, leek and thyme, while my sister ordered the ‘Classic Moo’ …

Stohrer, Paris

If there was only one thing I could do in Paris, it would be to eat all the beautiful pastries and sweets found in every neighbourhood. At the top of my foodie list was Stohrer. This place is special because it is the oldest patisserie in Paris. The founder, Nicolas Stohrer, was originally from Poland but eventually settled in the Palace of Versailles and became the official baker for the King of France, Louie XV. He also invented the ‘Baba au Rhum’ or Rum Baba as it is more well known. He then opened up shop in 1730 and it still remains in the same location today. Walking into Stohrer gave me a sense of excitement. Everything was displayed magnificently, from the pastries, to the cakes, savoury delights and chocolates. This made it difficult to choose just one thing, so of course, I ended up with two delectable desserts – a Tartlette aux Fraise and a Millefeuille. Both were perfect in every way – beautifully presented, sweet, creamy and delicious. I didn’t get another chance …

Little & Friday Tuckshop

When I think of food heaven, the first place that comes to mind is Little & Friday. Think doughnuts filled with creme patisserie and raspberry coulis, ‘Baci’ cakes made with hazelnuts and chocolate, plus gourmet pies and sausage rolls like you’ve never seen before. And thankfully, for those who are studying/working or playing in the CBD, you can now get your Little & Friday fix right on Durham Lane! The concept of this new store is different to their cafes in Belmont and Newmarket, in that everything is made for takeaway, just like a ‘tuckshop’. They’ve got cute and eco-friendly packaging too – delicious salads and homemade meals (like lasagne and ratatouille) are served in takeaway containers, while their doughnuts, cakes, pies, sausage rolls and brioches are served in paper bags. They do however have a table and bench seats outside for those who like to ‘eat in’ and it’s also a chance to people watch (one of the weird activities I like to do!) The Food Show, Auckland

  I don’t know about you, but every year I get very excited about the Auckland Food Show, held over three days in July/August at ASB Showgrounds. I love it because it gives you a chance to meet all your favourite product owners, try new foods, take home free samples/goodie bags and taste, taste, taste! Last year, I discovered The Lucky Taco at The Food Show and it is definitely one of my favourite foodie experiences to date! Delicious tacos in either a corn or flour tortilla plus an agua de horchata (sweetened, iced rice milk infused with cinnamon) and you’re all set for the day! I attended the show on Friday and was instantly surprised at how much bigger the event was compared to last year. I was also excited to see that many new companies have popped up over the last year and that really gave me a chance to talk to the owners about their product, which is what I really love. My new favourite products that I tasted included the Deluxe Hot Chocolate by West Coast Cocoa, Coconut Flour …
