Melie’s Kitchen Fudgy Rocky Road Cookies

I have never met a cookie I didn’t like. There are so many delicious ones. Chocolate chip, Nutella, oreo marshmallow, peanut butter, white chocolate macadamia, snickers, salted caramel, chocolate cookie sandwich, fortune cookies and s’mores to name quite a few. And now, I have a new favourite cookie… a Fudgy Rocky Road Cookie! Thanks to Amelia Ferrier of Melie’s Kitchen, an 18 year old Aucklander who makes beautiful cakes (you can order them from her website here). Last year, she held a demonstration and cookbook launch at Collected, where we watched her decorate one of her amazing cakes and there were samplings afterwards. Of course, I couldn’t leave without buying her cookbook, entitled ‘Melie’s Kitchen‘ which is filled with recipes for her wonderful cake creations, cookies, slices and pastries. I love all the recipes in her cookbook, in particular the Fudgy Rocky Road Cookies. The mix of dark chocolate, almonds and marshmallows sounded delicious. Melie says in her book that you will love these cookies because of their fudgy and chewy texture, and the marshmallows toast beautifully on top, while the almonds give …

Queenstown Travel Diary

Last year, my older sister moved to Glenorchy, so we decided to spend Christmas and New Years in nearby Queenstown. I was super excited as it was my first time travelling to Queenstown and I couldn’t wait to experience all that it had to offer. I love that there are so many things to do in Queenstown, and that everyone is catered for, whether you are into adventure sports, being out on the water, tramping, trying new foods, keeping active or just relaxing by a beautiful lake (I especially loved Lake Wakatipu and Lake Wanaka). Check out the list below of my favourite foodie places (with recommendations), shopping, and activities in Queenstown and beyond: EAT 1. Fergburger – undoubtedly Queenstown’s most iconic foodie experience! However, be prepared to wait over an hour (or more) for your burger, but it is definitely worth it! Recommended: I loved the Bombay Chicken burger, washed down with a Speights beer 2. Patagonia Chocolates – I fell in love with this place while in Queenstown. Situated on the waterfront, they sell mouthwatering ice cream, desserts, hot and cold drinks, and of course, homemade chocolates. Definitely head to …

Vegan Cocoa Coconut Treats

You may have read my recent post on The Caker, aka Jordan Rondel. She makes unusual but mouthwatering cakes, cookies and sweet delights. This recipe is from her first book, as pictured below. These cocoa coconut treats are super simple to recreate, and are perfect as a lunchbox snack, a ‘pick me up’ at work or enjoyed with a hot cup of tea. Jordan says in her book that because the treats are vegan, they can also be served raw – just chill the balls in the fridge for an hour or so. However, baking them in the oven gives them a texture, somewhere between a truffle and a cookie, crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Sounds perfect! Makes approximately 20 treats. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups dried shredded coconut 1/2 cup good quality cocoa powder 30g rolled oats 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted (I used Nudecoconut) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon extra shredded coconut for rolling balls in Method 1. In a bowl of an electric mixer, combine the coconut, cocoa powder and rolled oats. Mix in …

La Cigale French Market

If you are looking for something fun to do on a Saturday or Sunday morning and which involves lots of delicious food, then I highly recommend checking out La Cigale French Market in Parnell. It is undoubtedly the best market in Auckland. Here’s a taste of what you may come across at La Cigale: – Delicious coffee, macarons and croissants just out of the oven – Rotisserie chickens, gooey croque monsieurs, breakfast buns and other savoury delights – Delectable tarts (my favourite being the Frangipani tart with rhubarb and pistachio) and eclairs from Amadine – Freshly made juices, plus smoothies from The Organic Mechanic – Muesli and chia seed bowls from The Vital Bowl – Various international foods like paella, crepes and gozleme – Freshly baked bread, smoked fish, fruit and vegetables – Tasty dips, Turkish bread, wraps and fresh dates – And you probably wouldn’t believe it but there is a stand near the entrance selling every dog treat you can imagine! The market can get quite crowded, so I recommend coming here as early as possible – my favourite time being …

Miann

2015 is definitely the year of desserts. First there was Milse, which although it opened in 2013, it forever remains my favourite restaurant, for their ever changeable desserts and exciting creations. It is also where I can go and order dessert for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and not feel weird about it. Then came the Sweet Cuisine Dessert Pop Ups. Like a sit down dinner, but instead of a ‘normal’ three course meal, you were served three courses of desserts. This brought a whole new level to dessert dining. And now, there is Miann. A sophisticated dessert bar/patisserie serving beautiful gateaux, gelato on sticks, handmade chocolates, and stand out macarons. The mastermind behind creating all these delectable desserts is pâtissier, Brian Campbell. With 15 years’ work experience under his belt, including having held the position of head chef at Milse and starting up his own company, namely Sweet Cuisine (you may recognise his dessert pop ups around Auckland), Brian has done great things for Auckland’s foodie scene. More recently, he and his wife, Roselle, have opened up Miann on Fort Street. My friend and I visited Miann earlier this week for lunch. Walking in, the fit out is dark and intimate, but …

Giapo

Giapo is one of my favourite places in Auckland CBD. I have been here several times since it opened in 2008 and it has always been a great experience. They had a re-vamp a few years ago, which looks great; however, you cannot see the ice cream flavours any more! I went last year and while I was sad about not seeing Giapo’s wonderful creations, the staff still let you sample all the ice creams – as many as you want. While a visual picture is important, deciding what you will have based just on taste does make it a little more exciting! I ordered one scoop of the Cocoa Sorbet ($6). It by far my favourite flavour and the quality is amazing. It was drizzled with chocolate sauce and topped with freeze dried raspberries, which made it even more delicious! My friend went with a scoop of the Cocoa Sorbet and Pistachio flavours. Hers came topped with a mini macaron – it looked like a work of art! Lately my favourite flavours have been the …

Harrods Food Hall – London

Harrods is a beautiful and glamorous department store located in Knightsbridge, which opened in 1849, and is one of the most famous attractions in the world today. The store spans over seven floors and has over 330 different departments, making it the biggest department store in Europe! My favourite part of Harrods is the food halls… Stepping into Harrods Food Hall was like all my wildest food fantasies had come true… – Delectable desserts, sweet tarts and cupcakes ready to be boxed; – Cookies, cronuts and doughnuts like you have never seen before; – Wraps with exotic fillings and salads made to order; – Perfect pies, Japanese delights and mouthwatering pizza breads; and – Fresh juices with flavours like apple and raspberry. And the best thing about all the delicious food is that it is handmade onsite, fresh everyday. Bonus!!! Highlights included: A freshly made baguette with Thai chicken, spices, lettuce, red onion and peppers, a Mediterranean vegetarian pide pizza, a fresh raspberry juice, and another baguette with goat’s cheese, rocket and tomato… because they …

L’Eclair de Genie, Paris

I find it hard to believe that I had never tried an eclair prior to visiting Paris a few weeks ago! I have definitely been missing out because eclairs are wonderful – choux pastry on the outside, and a mousse filing inside. One bite and you’re in sweet foodie heaven. This is how I felt when I had my first eclair at L’Eclair de Genie. The shop is small and selling only one thing – eclairs. There are many to choose from and all have different toppings, such as fruit, chocolate or gold flakes. I ended up choosing a double chocolate eclair with gold dusted dark chocolate – delicious! My eclair was then boxed and put into a cute bag. Nearby are the Luxembourg Gardens, which is the perfect place to devour this work of art! It was a great first experience and it might become my new obsession! I loved L’Eclair de Genie and will definitely re-visit next time I’m in Paris! L’Eclair de Genie 13 rue de l’Ancienne Comédie, Paris Open: Monday to …
