Yelp Elite Event: Spanish Fiesta

As of yesterday, in one months’ time, I will be in Spain. And what better way to celebrate than at Yelp Auckland Elite’s ‘Spanish Fiesta’ event held at The Black Hoof last night! The highlight of the night was definitely the moorish toasted sandwiches filled with jamon (or Spanish cured ham) and melted cheese – I couldn’t get enough of them! We also got to sample mini meatballs, goats cheese croquettes, salted almonds and olives, all of which are on The Black Hoof’s tapas menu. Other highlights included the two huge legs of jamon, carved beautifully by Joan of Iberian Foods. There were two different types of jamon – the first one named ‘Iberico Bellota’ which is an acorn-fed pig and the second one named ‘Iberico Mangalica’ which is Hungarian grain fed pig (if you google them, you will see that they sort of resemble sheep!) Both jamon were scrumptious – salty, soft and they would be perfect in sandwiches or just delicious on their own! To accompany all the delectable delights, Jorge from Casita Miro provided a sherry tasting …

Depot Eatery & Oyster Bar

If you’re looking for a fantastic dining experience complete with delicious food, brilliant service and a great atmosphere, then head to Depot now! We were a party of five on a bustling Friday night. It was incredibly busy when we (my sister and I) arrived at 6pm, so we were put on the waiting list. Due to our other friends arriving late, we didn’t sit down until 7.30pm. [Note that your whole group has to arrive before they seat you]. If we were at any other restaurant, we would have left, but this was Depot and we were all dead keen to try it out! While waiting, you can find a table outside and order a few drinks. We had beer and cocktails [note that there is no cocktail list on the drinks menu, so just tell the waiter your favourite ingredient i.e. ‘something with tequila’ or ‘something fruity’ – trust me they did an amazing job!]. Also ordering a few snacks like their potato skins may be an option, and then you can stand …

Zomato Foodie Meetup: Sawadee

I had always heard great things about Sawadee, but sadly had never been, possibly due to the fact that I have only eaten Thai food twice in my life! So, when I was lucky enough to be invited to a degustation at Sawadee, held as part of Zomato’s Foodie Meetup, I was super excited, not only for the food, but also to meet fellow Zomato reviewers! Upon walking in, I was warmly greeted with ‘Sawadee’ and shown to our table. The table setting was very pretty, with royal blue being the main feature colour. I also loved the overall décor and ambience of the place – from the indoor waterfall and the beautiful flowers on our table, to the various pot plants dotted around the restaurant – it had a great tropical and summery feel to it! We first started off with a few drinks. Sawadee had compiled a new summer cocktail list, saying that ‘no one else in Auckland has tried yet’ which was quite exciting! I ordered the ‘Sunkiss’ which consisted of …

Federal Delicatessen

I have never been to an ‘old-school New York City Jewish delicatessen’ before, but if they are anything like Federal Delicatessen (“The Fed“), then I am absolutely sold. The menu is fabulous, seriously never tried ‘schticks’, ‘milk-fed schnitzel’, ‘salmon latkes’ or ‘Montreal Poutine’ before and the sweet desserts (pumpkin pie, NY cheesecake, banoffee pie, lemon meringue pie and choc cherry pie) are all absolutely delicious. Also love the decor! Art on the walls, ‘Federal’ bottomless mugs filled with filter coffee, the waitresses’ pastel outfits, the odd knick knacks when you look up (which I only noticed on my second visit to The Fed), the red lined chef’s hats and one of the coolest bar back walls I have seen around Auckland. Highly recommend ordering the ‘Montreal Poutine’. It is a Canadian dish of fries with cheese curd (melt in your mouth!) and gravy. We shared this between two of us, but it was filling nonetheless. We also tried the ‘schticks’, which are croquettes filled with peas and pastrami – such a beautiful green colour inside! These were …

Burger Burger

Last weekend, two friends and I finally made it to Burger Burger (yes, it’s been long overdue!). It was packed when we arrived, but not surprising as I have only heard good things about the place. We were told there would be a 20 minute wait, but that was okay because we went to a nearby park (Brown Reserve), swung on swings and re-lived our childhood! Upon walking in, we first noticed the décor and surroundings – so much good looking liquor! Plus the colourful mural above the liquor, the pin-striped menus, and last but not least, the waiters’ uniforms and their cool “BB” caps – we all wanted one! Before I get to the food (most important thing in life), I must talk about the service. Absolutely top notch! Our waiter explained the menu thoroughly and gave great recommendations. He was super cool (and pretty cute too!). Now, for the food… My eyes were set on the Pork Burger – mainly because it came lathered with their homemade BBQ sauce (best thing ever), but after ordering, …

Milse

[As you can see, I am addicted to Milse!] I remember hearing about this one of a kind dessert restaurant that would be opening up in a few weeks time (this was back in 2013). I was so excited that I stopped by the restaurant every week to ask when they were opening their doors! First time walking in was quite a surprise! The inside is quite a small space, with only a few tables so it is quite hard to get a seat! My friend and I arrived about 11am and managed to get a table, but every other time I have been of late, it is always fully booked. I would love it if Milse moved to bigger premises but we will just have to wait and see! I highly recommend trying a verrine, gateaux or chocolate tart. These are all delicious treats. However, the macarons were a stand out. Milse has many macaron flavours to choose from and I always love popping in to try out the new ones. My favourites are …
