Auckland Fish Market

I absolutely love seafood. Oysters, mussels, prawns, hoki, kina, gurnard, crayfish, whitebait, clams, flounder, scallops, tuna, snapper, paua – you name it.  I would eat seafood for every meal if I could… maybe just not for dessert as that is reserved for my other favourite food – chocolate. So, when I was invited to the official opening party of the Auckland Fish Market last Monday, I was super excited! Most of you will already know, but for the last nine months’, the Auckland Fish Market in Wynyard Quarter has undergone renovations, to include eight new eateries, a courtyard bar, a world class fishmonger – Sanford & Sons and seating for 400 inside and out, making it an ideal dining destination for Aucklanders and for tourists alike.  The newly refurbished Auckland Fish Market is a celebration of New Zealand seafood – in fact it sells the widest range of the freshest seafood available, straight from the boats to your dinner table.  At the opening party of the Auckland Fish Market, we sampled freshly shucked TeKouma Bay oysters, fish sliders from Market Galley, swordfish, green …

A Weekend in Wellington

It was my birthday a few weeks’ ago, so I decided to spend a weekend in Wellington. Here’s what we got up to on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy! FRIDAY We arrived in Wellington around 1pm and thankfully, it was a nice sunny day! Uber seemed a tempting way to get to our hotel, but instead we caught the Airport bus to the “Wellington Railway Station” ($12 one way). The trip only takes about 20 minutes, but somehow we missed our stop, and ended up on the motorway, driving to Petone! Never fear, we had planned to visit Petone in the afternoon. Ravenous, we headed to Kilim for a late lunch. Kilim is a family owned restaurant (there is also a branch in Napier which we have been to) and they do great Turkish fare. We ordered their Doner Kebab with chicken and Iskender Meal with falafel, which also comes with a generous amount of rice, hummus, beetroot dip, mixed salad, tabbouleh and Turkish bread. Both meals were filling, delicious and reasonably priced. Highly recommend …

ASB Auckland Seafood Festival

Living in New Zealand, we are blessed to have beautiful seafood right at our doorstep. Oysters, scallops, kina, crayfish, mussels, scampi, salmon, tarakihi, eel… the list goes on! And this weekend (Auckland Anniversary), you can taste all your favourite seafood dishes, sample products, attend cooking demonstrations, and relax in the sunshine all at the ASB Auckland Seafood Festival (check out the view from the festival above!). Thanks to Zomato, I attended the Seafood Festival today and had a great time! The sun was shining, the crowds were brimming (which I don’t mind as I love to people watch) and the seafood was abundant. Depot Eatery & Oyster Bar

If you’re looking for a fantastic dining experience complete with delicious food, brilliant service and a great atmosphere, then head to Depot now! We were a party of five on a bustling Friday night. It was incredibly busy when we (my sister and I) arrived at 6pm, so we were put on the waiting list. Due to our other friends arriving late, we didn’t sit down until 7.30pm. [Note that your whole group has to arrive before they seat you]. If we were at any other restaurant, we would have left, but this was Depot and we were all dead keen to try it out! While waiting, you can find a table outside and order a few drinks. We had beer and cocktails [note that there is no cocktail list on the drinks menu, so just tell the waiter your favourite ingredient i.e. ‘something with tequila’ or ‘something fruity’ – trust me they did an amazing job!]. Taste of Auckland 14

Over the weekend, I attended my first Taste of Auckland. I was so incredibly excited as it really is a foodie’s heaven! Held over four days, Taste showcases some of the best restaurants in Auckland. Each restaurant offers 2-4 dishes, costing between $8-$20. I only tried three meals from three restaurants – iVillage, Harbourside and Depot. Next year I will be trying more! I have never been to iVillage Indian restaurant before, so I was excited to try a dish from their menu. I decided on the ‘Lamb Gilafi Kebab’ consisting of lamb mince on skewers with coloured bell peppers, which was delicious! Quite spicy for me, but I still scoffed them down nonetheless. My friend had the ‘Gol Guppa‘ which are mini poories with spiced potatoes doused with mint and tamarind water. I had never heard of or seen these before, so I was more than happy to try one! So light, but very flavoursome. From the Harbourside stand, the ‘Smoked Ora King Salmon’ stood out the most.
