Hawke’s Bay Travel Diary

Over the summer holidays, I spent a week in Hawke’s Bay, a region in the North Island of New Zealand, which is home to fresh, delicious produce and beautiful wines. In fact, Hawke’s Bay is the oldest wine region in New Zealand and the second largest (after Marlborough). There is lots to do in Hawke’s Bay, from dining at the many restaurants and cafes, sampling local wines, climbing mountains, exploring beaches, or picking up your produce for the week at the amazing farmer’s market. Hunger Monger, Napier

If you love seafood, then you will love Hunger Monger. We found this restaurant by chance, while walking along Marine Parade in Napier. The restaurant was full and the ambience alive, so the next day we went in to book a table for our final night in Hawke’s Bay. Run by Polish couple, Fraser Slack and Agnieszka Wills, the menu is predominantly seafood, where diners can enjoy oysters, Aussie prawns, grilled fish, Cook Strait octopus, squid, sashimi and salmon to name a few. Also, 98% of their wines and beers are local to the area – many I had never heard of before. We had a glass of the Beatrix Rose by Alpha Domus (Bridge Pa) and Brookfields Pinot Gris 2016 (Ohiti Estate). The Pinot Gris was a stand out, so much so, we went to New World afterwards to purchase a few bottles of it!  For starters, we enjoyed their Tempura Prawns with dipping sauces – big, fat, juicy prawns, which were gone in a flash. Hapī, Napier

Hapī is WOW. Their ethos “you are what you eat” and that “physical and mental wellbeing is a true reflection of how you fuel your body” rings true to my New Year’s Resolution for this year, so I was really excited to check out this cute cafe, while on holiday in Napier. At Hapī, their food is plant based, full of nutrients and very delicious. If you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy free or just love eating one or all of the above, then Hapī is your place! Their menu is extensive – for such a small cafe, they sure have a range of everything on offer. Their cabinet display is also one of the best I have seen in New Zealand, with all the food well presented and the staff continuously preparing all the goodies just behind the counter. I could literally stand there for ages, watching them make sandwiches! Gold Coast Eats

If you are looking for a short, relaxing break, then I highly recommend the Gold Coast. There are beautiful beaches, shopping, and of course, many places to eat and drink. The last time I visited the Gold Coast was 6 years ago, before my obsession with food started, before I even had Instagram or my blog. On that trip, we enjoyed going to the theme parks and beaches. Fast forward to this year, I have made a few trips to the Gold Coast – mainly to relax, try out the food scene and for the first time, visit Byron Bay and the surrounds. Top 5 Barcelona Eats + Recipe

Following on from my Barcelona Travel Diary post, check out my Top 5 Eats in Barcelona, plus a recipe for one of my favourite Spanish dishes – paella! BACOA My sister and I love burgers – we are attempting to try every burger place in Auckland, and every time we try a new one, I always ask her “so, how do you like your burger?”, and her reply is always the same – “BACOA is still the best!”. Paired with patatas bravas and a beer in hand, these are some of the best burgers you will ever have. Click here for my review and photo diary of BACOA. Our top choice at BACOA is their Vegetariana burger – the patty is made of chickpeas, sweet corn, baby spinach and red pepper and topped with a spicy tomato chutney and creamed goat’s cheese. Ooh la la! We also loved the Japonesa burger (beef glazed with traditional teriyaki sauce) and the Pollo burger (fresh chicken breast marinated for 12 hours, then chargrilled). Paris Eats

Following on from my Paris Photo Diary post, check out my list below for my favourite eateries in Paris! As you will see, they are mainly patisseries (I have a mega sweet tooth), but I have also included two fine dining restaurants, two great vegetarian eateries and of course, ice cream.  EATS Stohrer – If there was only one thing I could do in Paris, it would be to eat all the beautiful pastries and sweets found in every neighbourhood. At the top of my foodie list was Stohrer. This place is special because it is the oldest patisserie in Paris. I recommend ordering a Millefieulle and a Tartlette aux Fraise, which were perfect in every way! Location: 51 rue Montorgueil L’Eclair de Genie – Head here for decadent eclairs and you will be transported into sweet foodie heaven. Nearby is the Luxembourg Gardens, which is the perfect place to devour these works of art! I recommend their double chocolate eclair with gold dusted dark chocolate… dreamy! BACOA, Barcelona

BAAAAAAAAAAACOA. Wow. Where do I start… …Imagine a bright sunny day, sitting outside under a few umbrellas, right across from Barceloneta beach. You are with a couple of friends, drinking a few cold beers, and eating your way through Bacoa’s menu – patatas bravas and French fries with spicy sauces and of course, the best burgers you will ever eat. Heavenly… On a recent trip to Barcelona, my sister and I were searching for a particular burger joint. We came across Bacoa by chance and decided to scratch our original idea, because Bacoa really stood out. You order what you want by ticking small boxes on a menu card. You pay at the counter, take your buzzer and your ‘make your own’ cardboard burger holder and then head out to their lovely outdoor area (you can also eat inside, but with Barcelona’s hot and sunny weather, I would recommending sitting outside – great for people watching and also you are right near the beach). Borough Market, London

Borough Market = amazing!!! An absolute must if you are a foodie fanatic (like myself) or love trying out new foods! We visited Borough Market on our last day in London – luckily my appetite was back, because the food options here are outstanding, both in presentation and taste. You’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables, pungent cheeses, savoury breads, cookies the size of your hands (see picture below), sweet treats, handmade chocolates and ice cream. And if that doesn’t satisfy you, there is ethnic food available (for example from the ‘Soul Food’ and vegetarian Indian stands), super tasty pies (Pieminister), haloumi burgers (The Veggie Table), salted caramel doughnuts (Bread Ahead Bakery) and fresh juices and smoothies. While I would have loved to have tried one of everything, I was craving a pie. Pieminister were serving the most delicious array of pies, plus they use free range meat and chicken and have two vegetarian options.
