Major Sprout

If you are looking for the perfect inner city breakfast spot, then Major Sprout may just be the best choice. It ticks all the boxes – delicious food, great coffee and efficient service. Major Sprout is owned by David Lee, who also runs the popular eateries Dear Jervois in Herne Bay and Little King in Milford. I admit, Major Sprout opened in November 2015… so I am a bit late to the party. But it was definitely worth the wait, especially for their famous and Insta-worthy buttermilk pancakes. We visited Major Sprout last weekend for breakfast. The cafe is tucked down Graham Street, just up the road from Victoria Park. Inside, the fit out is modern, light and airy, with greenery in every corner and plenty of seating options. We arrived quite early (8.30am) so there was no need to make a reservation, but any later, I would definitely recommend booking a table. Healthy Chocolate Berry Fudge Brownie

I love a good brownie. While I usually stick to the traditional recipe of flour, sugar, butter, eggs, etc. I have always wanted to try something different. Introducing a healthy version for Chocolate Berry Fudge Brownie, from Nadia Lim’s latest cookbook, Fresh Start. The secret ingredient in these brownies are black beans! At first, I was a bit skeptical of not having flour in my brownie, but Nadia says in her book: “This brownie contains a secret ingredient that makes it so much healthier than other brownies (as well as gluten free). You’ll never believe it, but black beans make a great substitute to flour in baking – the end result is a moist, fudgy chocolate brownie (that you could never tell contained beans). You’ll have to make it to believe it!” And she is right! The brownie tastes great. You would never believe that there are black beans in there, and the texture is fudgy and moist. Heads up dessert lovers, chocoholics, and gelato stick/macaron fans, Miann has just opened up their second store in Britomart!

If you are any of the above, then I guarantee you will love Miann, a sophisticated dessert bar and patisserie in Auckland CBD.

Paris Eats

Following on from my Paris Photo Diary post, check out my list below for my favourite eateries in Paris! As you will see, they are mainly patisseries (I have a mega sweet tooth), but I have also included two fine dining restaurants, two great vegetarian eateries and of course, ice cream.  EATS Stohrer – If there was only one thing I could do in Paris, it would be to eat all the beautiful pastries and sweets found in every neighbourhood. At the top of my foodie list was Stohrer. This place is special because it is the oldest patisserie in Paris. I recommend ordering a Millefieulle and a Tartlette aux Fraise, which were perfect in every way! Location: 51 rue Montorgueil L’Eclair de Genie – Head here for decadent eclairs and you will be transported into sweet foodie heaven. Nearby is the Luxembourg Gardens, which is the perfect place to devour these works of art! I recommend their double chocolate eclair with gold dusted dark chocolate… dreamy! Dessert Degustation Walking Tour

Dessert. My favourite word and my favourite meal. And what better way to celebrate it with a walking dessert degustation held in the Heart of the City? I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a Tuesday night! Held as part of Auckland’s Restaurant Month* and with support from Auckland Transport, this Dessert Degustation Walking Tour is a brand new addition to Restaurant Month and one event that I have long been waiting for! We met the lovely food and travel writer, Delaney Mes, who was our host for the evening, at Aotea Square, and spent the next two hours walking through the city’s laneways, and shared spaces, and devoured three sweet delights (and a fabulous cocktail) at Giapo, Cornerbar, Miann and Milse. Our first stop was Giapo. This iconic ice cream shop opened in 2008 by creative genius, Giapo Grazioli (pictured below) and his wife, Annarosa, and still remains one of my favourite places in Auckland’s CBD. Their ice cream is different to that of the normal ones you would get at a dairy – Giapo’s are like works of art. Heads up bakery lovers, there’s a new joint in town! Introducing the latest venture from the talented Hip Group – Amano bakery. Located in Britomart, you can now get your daily fix of artisan breads, sandwiches, sweet treats, pizza by the slice and salads. I visited Amano last week for lunch and was excited to try out their offerings. Walking in, I loved everything about this new bakery – the well-stocked small space, the heavenly smell of freshly baked bread, the clever design and hanging wheat feature (look up when you step inside), the friendly and welcoming manager I chatted to while I was there and the  staff member who didn’t mind explaining each offering and the ingredients used, as I seriously couldn’t decide on just one thing! So, I ordered a slice of pizza, a salad and a choux pastry bun. The pizza by the slice was high on my list – it is not like traditional pizza, as it is made by slowly fermenting the dough, and is more in the style of focaccia bread. The salami, provolone …

Vegan Cocoa Coconut Treats

You may have read my recent post on The Caker, aka Jordan Rondel. She makes unusual but mouthwatering cakes, cookies and sweet delights. This recipe is from her first book, as pictured below. These cocoa coconut treats are super simple to recreate, and are perfect as a lunchbox snack, a ‘pick me up’ at work or enjoyed with a hot cup of tea. Jordan says in her book that because the treats are vegan, they can also be served raw – just chill the balls in the fridge for an hour or so. However, baking them in the oven gives them a texture, somewhere between a truffle and a cookie, crisp on the outside and soft in the middle. Sounds perfect! Makes approximately 20 treats. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups dried shredded coconut 1/2 cup good quality cocoa powder 30g rolled oats 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted (I used Nudecoconut) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon extra shredded coconut for rolling balls in Method 1. In a bowl of an electric mixer, combine the coconut, cocoa powder and rolled oats. La Cigale French Market

If you are looking for something fun to do on a Saturday or Sunday morning and which involves lots of delicious food, then I highly recommend checking out La Cigale French Market in Parnell. It is undoubtedly the best market in Auckland. Here’s a taste of what you may come across at La Cigale: – Delicious coffee, macarons and croissants just out of the oven – Rotisserie chickens, gooey croque monsieurs, breakfast buns and other savoury delights – Delectable tarts (my favourite being the Frangipani tart with rhubarb and pistachio) and eclairs from Amadine – Freshly made juices, plus smoothies from The Organic Mechanic – Muesli and chia seed bowls from The Vital Bowl – Various international foods like paella, crepes and gozleme – Freshly baked bread, smoked fish, fruit and vegetables – Tasty dips, Turkish bread, wraps and fresh dates – And you probably wouldn’t believe it but there is a stand near the entrance selling every dog treat you can imagine!
