Dessert Degustation Walking Tour

Dessert. My favourite word and my favourite meal. And what better way to celebrate it with a walking dessert degustation held in the Heart of the City? I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a Tuesday night! Held as part of Auckland’s Restaurant Month* and with support from Auckland Transport, this Dessert Degustation Walking Tour is a brand new addition to Restaurant Month and one event that I have long been waiting for! We met the lovely food and travel writer, Delaney Mes, who was our host for the evening, at Aotea Square, and spent the next two hours walking through the city’s laneways, and shared spaces, and devoured three sweet delights (and a fabulous cocktail) at Giapo, Cornerbar, Miann and Milse. Our first stop was Giapo. This iconic ice cream shop opened in 2008 by creative genius, Giapo Grazioli (pictured below) and his wife, Annarosa, and still remains one of my favourite places in Auckland’s CBD. Their ice cream is different to that of the normal ones you would get at a dairy – Giapo’s are like works of art. Miann

2015 is definitely the year of desserts. First there was Milse, which although it opened in 2013, it forever remains my favourite restaurant, for their ever changeable desserts and exciting creations. It is also where I can go and order dessert for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and not feel weird about it. Then came the Sweet Cuisine Dessert Pop Ups. Like a sit down dinner, but instead of a ‘normal’ three course meal, you were served three courses of desserts. This brought a whole new level to dessert dining. And now, there is Miann. A sophisticated dessert bar/patisserie serving beautiful gateaux, gelato on sticks, handmade chocolates, and stand out macarons. The mastermind behind creating all these delectable desserts is pâtissier, Brian Campbell. With 15 years’ work experience under his belt, including having held the position of head chef at Milse and starting up his own company, namely Sweet Cuisine (you may recognise his dessert pop ups around Auckland), Brian has done great things for Auckland’s foodie scene. More recently, he and his wife, Roselle, have opened up Miann on Fort Street. Ortolana

Imagine a restaurant right in the heart of the CBD serving delicious, locally grown food, plus desserts from Milse (my favourite hangout), with the dessert bar literally only being a hop, step and a jump away?!?! Sounds fabulous of course, and you’ll find it all at Ortolana in Britomart! The first time I dined at Ortolana it was a beautiful, crisp Saturday night. Luckily there was no wait for a table (they don’t take reservations but have a waiting list system which they say works well). We chose the cushion seats inside because they looked the most comfortable. We were both leaning towards something refreshing to drink, so went with a citrus juice and a mango iced tea, which were perfect accompaniments to our meals. There is also a short drinks list consisting of wine, digestives, sodas, smoothies and specialty cold/hot beverages (which all sound lovely). The menu is European based, with all their produce either locally sourced or grown in their orchard out at Kumeu. There are some unusual names on the menu, but don’t …

Sweet Cuisine Dessert Pop Up

Most of you would have heard of Milse. The amazing dessert bar and patisserie that opened up in Britomart a few years ago. Serving gelato on sticks, gateaux, chocolates, sweet tarts, plus their stand out macarons, Milse has become a bit of a phenomenon. Because really, who doesn’t love chocolate and dessert?!?! The mastermind behind creating all of Milse’s desserts is pâtissier, Brian Campbell. He has 15 years’ experience working in Michelin star restaurants in the United Kingdom and at award winning restaurants here in New Zealand, at the likes of Kermadec and The French Cafe. Most recently, Brian has left Milse and has started up his own company, namely Sweet Cuisine’ A Dessert Pop Up. So far, he and his partner, Roselle Campbell have hosted a dessert night at Fred’s Espresso in Ponsonby where they teamed up with Giapo to create ice cream sandwiches, sundaes and drinks and they also had a dessert pop up at Merediths last week. Milse

[As you can see, I am addicted to Milse!] I remember hearing about this one of a kind dessert restaurant that would be opening up in a few weeks time (this was back in 2013). I was so excited that I stopped by the restaurant every week to ask when they were opening their doors! First time walking in was quite a surprise! The inside is quite a small space, with only a few tables so it is quite hard to get a seat! My friend and I arrived about 11am and managed to get a table, but every other time I have been of late, it is always fully booked. I would love it if Milse moved to bigger premises but we will just have to wait and see! I highly recommend trying a verrine, gateaux or chocolate tart. These are all delicious treats. However, the macarons were a stand out. Milse has many macaron flavours to choose from and I always love popping in to try out the new ones. My favourites are …
