The Food Show 2017

Calling all food lovers! Today, I attended my favourite foodie event of the year, The Food Show Auckland. Held at the ASB Showgrounds over four days (Thursday 27 to Sunday 30 July), The Food Show showcases the best in food, drink and kitchen equipment from product owners around the country. There is so much to sample and buy at The Food Show, you get the opportunity to meet and talk with the owners behind all your favourite brands, experience different foodie zones and EAT, EAT, EAT, which is what I really love about this event! Below, I list my favourite zones, stands and products to buy at The Food Show. Ticket entry also includes cooking demonstrations by some of your favourite culinary stars at the Cooking Theatre! There will be 19 sessions over the four days, featuring headline cook Annabel Langbein, along with Michael Van de Elzen, Ray McVinnie, Simon Gault, Annabelle White, Nici Wickes, Jonny Schwass and French chef Nicolas Bourgois. Check out the timetable here. Another great thing about The Food Show is the product specials. …

Bedford Soda Mixology Masterclass

One of my all-time favourite activities is making cocktails, watching other people make cocktails and of course, drinking them – whether it be a homemade margarita, a rum concoction in a coconut, or a flaming volcano. So, I was pretty excited to attend a Zomato Foodie Meetup last Sunday afternoon at Bedford Soda and Liquor where we learnt about the science of mixology and also took part in a cocktail masterclass. To get the afternoon going, we all started with a refreshing cocktail which reminded me of summertime – a Vanilla Vodka Daisy (pictured above), with strong hints of passionfruit and decorated with lettuce leaves and edible flowers, while the manager, Kieran, talked about the history of Bedford Soda, in that their inspiration comes from the cocktail bars in Williamsburg, New York, where simplicity and creativity play the most important part in cocktail making. Bedford Soda has adopted this style and they are also passionate about serving simple food done well. It certainly doesn’t disappoint! We were then introduced to Mixologist and New Zealand Bar Champion of 2015, Phil Spector, who showed us how to make four of Bedford Soda’s amazing cocktails, …

Zomato Foodie Meetup: Besos Latinos

The first time I dined at Besos Latinos was a few years ago after my graduation ceremony. I remember it well – the bright and funky decor, the lively music, the super friendly staff, and of course, the delicious Mexican food. Plus, they surprised me with a dessert, decorated with “Congratulations on your graduation”. Fast forward to Monday night where I attended a Zomato foodie meetup with 19 other foodies, to learn how to recreate simple Mexican street food and cocktails at home. Owners Luis and Cecilia, head chef and maitre’d, have run Besos Latinos (translated as ‘Latin Kisses’) for almost six years. They both hail from Mexico and together, bring a wealth of knowledge of Mexican food, drink and culture. I particularly enjoyed learning about what life is like in Mexico, the food you will find on the streets and the different festivals they celebrate during the year, for example, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), where everyone gathers in the cemetery (along with food, drink and music) to talk about those …
