Georgieats’ Guide to New York

New York. A few months’ ago, I visited The City That Never Sleeps – New York. I am already dying to go back. Why you may ask? Well, New York is like no other place I have ever visited. The majority of my time spent in New York made me feel like I was on the set of several films I had ever seen. Yes, I admit, the majority of films and television shows I have watched inspired me to visit New York. Coming from a small scale city, New York was draw-dropping in real life. Hunger Monger, Napier

If you love seafood, then you will love Hunger Monger. We found this restaurant by chance, while walking along Marine Parade in Napier. The restaurant was full and the ambience alive, so the next day we went in to book a table for our final night in Hawke’s Bay. Run by Polish couple, Fraser Slack and Agnieszka Wills, the menu is predominantly seafood, where diners can enjoy oysters, Aussie prawns, grilled fish, Cook Strait octopus, squid, sashimi and salmon to name a few. Also, 98% of their wines and beers are local to the area – many I had never heard of before. We had a glass of the Beatrix Rose by Alpha Domus (Bridge Pa) and Brookfields Pinot Gris 2016 (Ohiti Estate). The Pinot Gris was a stand out, so much so, we went to New World afterwards to purchase a few bottles of it!  For starters, we enjoyed their Tempura Prawns with dipping sauces – big, fat, juicy prawns, which were gone in a flash. Hapī, Napier

Hapī is WOW. Their ethos “you are what you eat” and that “physical and mental wellbeing is a true reflection of how you fuel your body” rings true to my New Year’s Resolution for this year, so I was really excited to check out this cute cafe, while on holiday in Napier. At Hapī, their food is plant based, full of nutrients and very delicious. If you are vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy free or just love eating one or all of the above, then Hapī is your place! Their menu is extensive – for such a small cafe, they sure have a range of everything on offer. Their cabinet display is also one of the best I have seen in New Zealand, with all the food well presented and the staff continuously preparing all the goodies just behind the counter. I could literally stand there for ages, watching them make sandwiches! Gold Coast Eats

If you are looking for a short, relaxing break, then I highly recommend the Gold Coast. There are beautiful beaches, shopping, and of course, many places to eat and drink. The last time I visited the Gold Coast was 6 years ago, before my obsession with food started, before I even had Instagram or my blog. On that trip, we enjoyed going to the theme parks and beaches. Fast forward to this year, I have made a few trips to the Gold Coast – mainly to relax, try out the food scene and for the first time, visit Byron Bay and the surrounds. Queenstown Travel Diary

Last year, my older sister moved to Glenorchy, so we decided to spend Christmas and New Years in nearby Queenstown. I was super excited as it was my first time travelling to Queenstown and I couldn’t wait to experience all that it had to offer. I love that there are so many things to do in Queenstown, and that everyone is catered for, whether you are into adventure sports, being out on the water, tramping, trying new foods, keeping active or just relaxing by a beautiful lake (I especially loved Lake Wakatipu and Lake Wanaka). Check out the list below of my favourite foodie places (with recommendations), shopping, and activities in Queenstown and beyond: EAT 1. Fergburger – undoubtedly Queenstown’s most iconic foodie experience! However, be prepared to wait over an hour (or more) for your burger, but it is definitely worth it! Recommended: I loved the Bombay Chicken burger, washed down with a Speights beer 2. Patagonia Chocolates – I fell in love with this place while in Queenstown. Situated on the waterfront, they sell mouthwatering ice cream, desserts, hot and cold drinks, and of course, homemade chocolates. Borough Market, London

Borough Market = amazing!!! An absolute must if you are a foodie fanatic (like myself) or love trying out new foods! We visited Borough Market on our last day in London – luckily my appetite was back, because the food options here are outstanding, both in presentation and taste. You’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables, pungent cheeses, savoury breads, cookies the size of your hands (see picture below), sweet treats, handmade chocolates and ice cream. And if that doesn’t satisfy you, there is ethnic food available (for example from the ‘Soul Food’ and vegetarian Indian stands), super tasty pies (Pieminister), haloumi burgers (The Veggie Table), salted caramel doughnuts (Bread Ahead Bakery) and fresh juices and smoothies. While I would have loved to have tried one of everything, I was craving a pie. Pieminister were serving the most delicious array of pies, plus they use free range meat and chicken and have two vegetarian options. I went with the ‘Free Ranger’ consisting of chicken, ham hock, leek and thyme, while my sister ordered the ‘Classic Moo’ …

Huka Lodge, Taupo

From the moment we drove through the gates of Huka Lodge, admiring the rows of autumn trees and the perfectly manicured gardens, we were wowed. Two men opened our car doors and took our bags to our room, while the manager welcomed us inside and gave us a glass of champagne each. He took us on a tour around the main lodge where he explained the history, the design and also showed us their many dining areas, for example the room where the Queen dined to the wine cellar room where you can dine surrounded by 6,000 bottles of wine. The lodge was charming, the ambience was warm and we were starting to feel right at home.
