Allan Scott Generations Gewurztraminer matched with Kimchi & Tofu Dumplings

Two of my favourite winter foods are Kimchi and Dumplings. A staple in Korean cuisine, Kimchi is made from salted and fermented vegetables, in particular napa cabbages and Korean radishes, with added seasonings and chilli. Different variations of dumplings are eaten worldwide. In Auckland, it is easy to find a good dumpling, either in a restaurant, at a cheap eatery, and even in the supermarket. I have eaten plenty, believe you me, but have never actually made my own. Fast forward to last week, I received a bottle of the brand-new Allan Scott Generations Gewürztraminer 2016 from Allan Scott Family Winemakers, which was one of the first independent wineries to establish in Marlborough, New Zealand in 1990. The Allan Scott Generations Gewürztraminer (dubbed ‘G’whizz’ by the Allan Scott team) is the newest addition to their exclusive Generations range, with delicate and floral flavours and aromas – think exotic spices, candied figs, turkish delight and lychees. The G’whizz is divine on its own yet truly brought to life when paired with exotic foods, such as sweet Middle Eastern dishes, …

2016 Foodie Highlights

2016 was a great foodie year! I tried new dishes (at Tiger Burger and Judge Bao), I tried a new food truck (Temaki Truck), there were many foodie events (Auckland Food Show, Taste of Auckland, Seafood Festival, Food Space, streetARTdego and Auckland Night Noodle Markets to name a few), my favourite dessert bar (Miann) opened a second branch and I travelled to many wonderful places (Sydney, Fiji, all around Spain, London, Dublin and Edinburgh). Check out my list below for my 16 favourite foodie highlights of the year. Click the links after each to find out more. Enjoy! From left to right (main image above): Miann This year, Miann opened their second store (YAY) and in my favourite area – Britomart! Just like their Fort Street store, they are selling their beautifully presented gateaux, gelato sticks, macarons and handcrafted bonbons. The point of difference is the larger, brighter and airier space. My favourites so far include their Bombe Alaska dessert, the 55% Itakuja gateaux with dark chocolate, passionfruit, coconut and lime (pictured above) and the peanut butter …

Auckland Food Show 2016

I don’t know about you, but every year I get VERY excited about the Auckland Food Show, mainly because it is the biggest foodie event in my calendar! Held at the ASB Showgrounds over four days (Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 July), this event showcases the best in food and drink from product owners around the country. I love it because it gives you the chance to try and buy new and existing products, meet the owners behind all your favourite brands, and EAT, EAT, EAT (definitely recommend having a light breakfast!) I generally visit The Food Show on the weekend, but this year, I attended the ‘Preview Day’, which usually falls on the Thursday and is limited to only 4,000 people (as opposed to 20,000-35,000 on Saturday and Sunday!) I was instantly surprised at how much bigger the event was compared to last year. I was also excited to see that many new companies have popped up over the last year, which gave me a chance to talk to the owners about their product, which is what I really love about The Food Show. My new favourite products that …

Xuxu Dumpling & Bar

Cocktails, Dumplings and Dessert. Three of my favourite things. And three things that you will find at Xuxu Dumpling & Bar, making it one of my favourite eateries in the city. I have been frequenting Xuxu numerous times over the years, and each time, I struggle to find something negative to say about it. The service is consistently good, their cocktails and food are fantastic and the atmosphere is always buzzing. Xuxu also serves one of my favourite drinks in the CBD – a virgin passionfruit mojito. It is sweet, refreshing and the perfect accompaniment to plates of never ending dumplings. They also have a great cocktail list, along with a selection of beer, wine and cider. But, the main stand out is of course, their handmade dumplings. They are light, full of flavour and trust me, you will want to order one of everything! My favourites include the Prawn Har Gao (with ginger, onion and garlic), Chicken potstickers (fried dumplings with shiitake mushroom), Beef & Cabbage (with onion, ginger and garlic) and for extras, their sticky and spicy …

Lucky Lucky Dumplings

If someone asked me where they could get lucky tonight, I would tell them to head to the Las Vegas Club on Karangahape Road. But not to the actual club itself… but rather to sip on cocktails, eat plates of dumplings and groove to the music in your seat. Enter through a bright red door, up a few stairs, through a bead curtain and you will find yourself at Lucky Lucky Dumplings, a new pop up bar and eatery situated inside the Las Vegas Club. The first thing that caught my eye was the decor. Plush red booths, bar stool style seating, black carpet, red curtains, Chinese lanterns, and on the tables, Lucky Fortune cats, food court style chopsticks and laminated menus – very funky and cool. And if you are into the eighties era (like my dining companion) you’ll love the music – think hits from The Clash, Pink Floyd and Cyndi Lauper to name a few. Cocktails are the star drink of choice, with only three options to choose from. And most surprising of all, they are served in plastic …

ASB Auckland Seafood Festival

Living in New Zealand, we are blessed to have beautiful seafood right at our doorstep. Oysters, scallops, kina, crayfish, mussels, scampi, salmon, tarakihi, eel… the list goes on! And this weekend (Auckland Anniversary), you can taste all your favourite seafood dishes, sample products, attend cooking demonstrations, and relax in the sunshine all at the ASB Auckland Seafood Festival (check out the view from the festival above!). Thanks to Zomato, I attended the Seafood Festival today and had a great time! The sun was shining, the crowds were brimming (which I don’t mind as I love to people watch) and the seafood was abundant. Check out my sea-foodie highlights below: Clevedon Coast Oysters – 5/5 Clevedon Oysters – Half Shell Natural (6 for $10) I have to admit, for a very long time, I wouldn’t go near an oyster. But after finally taking the plunge and trying them at Depot last year, I have never looked back! They are truly perfect in every way, plus they have many health benefits! Oysters were definitely at the top of my list for …
