Top 5 Barcelona Eats + Recipe

Following on from my Barcelona Travel Diary post, check out my Top 5 Eats in Barcelona, plus a recipe for one of my favourite Spanish dishes – paella! BACOA My sister and I love burgers – we are attempting to try every burger place in Auckland, and every time we try a new one, I always ask her “so, how do you like your burger?”, and her reply is always the same – “BACOA is still the best!”. Paired with patatas bravas and a beer in hand, these are some of the best burgers you will ever have. Click here for my review and photo diary of BACOA. Our top choice at BACOA is their Vegetariana burger – the patty is made of chickpeas, sweet corn, baby spinach and red pepper and topped with a spicy tomato chutney and creamed goat’s cheese. Barcelona Travel Diary

Barcelona is my favourite city to date. It is located on the northeast coast of Spain and is the cosmopolitan and vibrant capital of the Spanish Catalonia region.  I have been twice now and both visits have been fabulous. I love the language, the rich culture, the beautiful scenery and stunning views from attractions all over the city, the relaxed lifestyle (and those siestas come afternoon) and of course, the cuisine! La Sagrada Família From the age of 13, La Sagrada Familia has been at the top of my travel bucket list. If you are visiting Barcelona, then this is definite MUST do. La Sagrada Familia is the famous basilica designed by the Catalan Spanish architect, Antonio Gaudi, and it is still in construction today, for some 135 years. Simple Seafood Paella

A few months’ ago I was in Barcelona. It was sunny, lively and the seafood was plentiful. While paella is not the city’s national dish (instead head to Valencia), there were still many restaurants serving paella. We unfortunately ate at a terrible restaurant (without previously looking at its reviews online) and their paella was the worst I have ever eaten. Far too salty which made it inedible and very little seafood. Since coming back to Auckland, I made it a priority to buy a paella pan (I like this one) and to start making paella for my family and friends. First up is my ‘Simple Seafood Paella’. You can add literally add any seafood you like – whatever you have in the fridge or freezer. This recipe is adapted from ‘The Food of Spain’ by Vicky Harris and John Newton.  Serves 4. Ingredients 1/2 cup white wine 1 red onion, chopped 12 mussels, bearded Dash of olive oil 4 garlic gloves, crushed (using the back of your knife) 1 red capsicum, finely chopped Salt and pepper for seasoning 1 cup paella rice …

Yelp Elite Event: Spanish Fiesta

As of yesterday, in one months’ time, I will be in Spain. And what better way to celebrate than at Yelp Auckland Elite’s ‘Spanish Fiesta’ event held at The Black Hoof last night! The highlight of the night was definitely the moorish toasted sandwiches filled with jamon (or Spanish cured ham) and melted cheese – I couldn’t get enough of them! We also got to sample mini meatballs, goats cheese croquettes, salted almonds and olives, all of which are on The Black Hoof’s tapas menu. Other highlights included the two huge legs of jamon, carved beautifully by Joan of Iberian Foods. There were two different types of jamon – the first one named ‘Iberico Bellota’ which is an acorn-fed pig and the second one named ‘Iberico Mangalica’ which is Hungarian grain fed pig (if you google them, you will see that they sort of resemble sheep!) Both jamon were scrumptious – salty, soft and they would be perfect in sandwiches or just delicious on their own!
